President Cyril Ramaphosa is expected to unpack and engage with those directly implicated in a series of explosive allegations made by KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi on Sunday.

Briefing the media in Durban, Mkhwanazi made several damning allegations against top police officials, including Minister of Police Senzo Mchunu and Deputy National Commissioner Shadrack Sibiya.

He claims they are complicit in a syndicate controlled by drug cartels and businesspeople who have infiltrated organised crime in the country.

Speaking from the BRICS Summit in Brazil on Monday, Ramaphosa said he will personally deal with the matter upon his return to South Africa.

“I was not aware of it, that it was coming and obviously it is a matter that I will deal with when I get home. I will need to look at it more closely and have a thoroughgoing discussion with a number of people and thereafter, there will be a clear way forward.”
