The Johannesburg city council is set to elect a new speaker following the recent removal of ActionSA’s Nobuhle Mthembu.

Mthembu was fired through an Al Jama-ah motion of no confidence last week.

Although her removal marks the end of the African National Congress (ANC)’s partnership with ActionSA in Johannesburg, both parties said they will continue to collaborate in other municipalities.

Smaller parties have been pushing for greater representation in senior council roles, especially since the ANC already holds the positions of mayor and council whip.

ActionSA has been completely excluded from consideration after it refused to support Mayor Dada Morero in last week’s no-confidence vote.

Over the past three years, the city has had four different speakers, each from a different party, and the one elected on Thursday will become the fifth.
