The African National Congress (ANC)’s National Executive Committee has resolved to reconfigure its Western Cape leadership.

This follows a poor electoral showing, where the party only managed 19.5% of the vote during last year’s elections.

The Western Cape will join the KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng ANC structures who have also been reconfigured and set up with provincial task teams.

Since losing the Western Cape to the Democratic Alliance (DA) in 2009, the ANC’s support in the province has dropped from 31.5% to 19.5%.

A similar scenario has also played out at local level where the ANC lost the City of Cape Town metro to the DA in 2006, and it has not come close to winning it back.

Speaking at a media briefing on Wednesday, ANC Secretary General Fikile Mbalula said officials from the party’s National Working Committee (NWC) will soon descend on the Western Cape.

“In KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng, the provincial task teams have recorded significant progress in rebuilding structures and restoring organisational coherence. The NEC noted this progress with satisfaction. The Western Cape, however, demands a reconfiguration of its structures, which will be executed in strict adherence to the ANC constitution.”

Mbalula said preparations for the upcoming local government elections have begun in earnest.
