Suspended Patriotic Alliance deputy leader Kenny Kunene has resigned as a councillor in the City of Johannesburg with immediate effect.

This comes after Kunene was found outside the home of Katiso “KT” Molefe, who has been arrested in connection with the murder of Oupa Sefoka, popularly known as Dj Sumbody.

Kunene was spotted outside Molefe’s residence during a police raid earlier this month.

His presence at the scene raised eyebrows, prompting the Patriotic Alliance to suspend him as the party’s deputy president and MMC for transport in Johannesburg.

While the Patriotic Alliance had only suspended Kunene from his party duties and recalled him as Johannesburg’s MMC for transport, Kunene has now chosen to resign as a councillor altogether.

This comes as the party launches an internal investigation, which is expected to last 30 days.

In his resignation letter to the speaker of the Johannesburg city council, Kunene said he recognises that stepping back from public life is in the public interest until the matter is resolved.

Kunene insists that there was nothing untoward about his visit to the home of KT Molefe — who was identified by KZN Police Commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi as one of the individuals infiltrating law enforcement agencies.

He said he had accompanied a journalist from an online publication he owns to conduct an exclusive interview with Molefe.

While the identity of the journalist remains unknown, Kunene has committed to fully cooperating with the party’s investigation

He also said he is proud of the contributions he made during his time as councillor and MMC.

The Patriotic Alliance will now have to consider  a replacement for Kunene’s now vacant seat in the city council.
