National Police Commissioner Fannie Masemola has confirmed that deputy commissioner for crime detection, Shadrach Sibiya, was placed on leave pending an investigation.
Sibiya has been implicated in corruption by his colleague, KwaZulu-Natal National Police Commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi.
The provincial top cop has linked Sibiya to attempts to disband the SAPS political task team, which investigates political and other high-profile murder cases.
Masemola was in Durban on Tuesday to receive a memorandum of demands from a group of protestors calling for a clampdown of criminal activity.
“Yes indeed, he has been served with documents to take leave while the processes are underway. We don’t normally like to discuss details of our departmental processes, but yes.”
Masemola said there was also an internal investigation into allegations against Sibiya.
“Investigation regarding what has been alleged. [Is he the only one?] Yes, correct.”
