The fate of Police Minister Senzo Mchunu hangs in the balance ahead of President Cyril Ramaphosa’s planned address this Sunday.
The president has announced that he will finally be briefing the nation regarding the bombshell allegations of corruption within the top brass of the country’s security cluster.
It’s been almost a week since KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi made startling allegations of undue political interference in the SAPS political killings task team.
By the time President Cyril Ramaphosa’s address begins on Sunday, he would already have been briefed by National Police Commissioner Fannie Masemola and Mchunu.
Mkhwanazi placed Mchunu at the centre of an allegedly corrupt network that conspired to shut down the SAPS political killings task team.
While Mchunu did issue a directive for the task team to be disbanded, he said the reason was due to its having already served its purpose.
On Wednesday, Masemola revealed he never followed through with Mchunu’s directive to disband the task team.
This was in contradiction to the comments by Masemola’s deputy, Shadrack Sibiya, who publicly announced that the task team was disbanded.
Ramaphosa is expected to provide the next step in this saga.
