KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi has raised concerns about classified police files being comprised by people outside of the organisation.

In an unprecedented move on Sunday, Mkhwanazi broke rank, claiming a syndicate of drug cartels and businesspeople had captured the criminal justice system in Gauteng.

He further alleged that Minister of Police Senzo Mchunu and Deputy National Commissioner Shadrack Sibiya were meddling in operations to unravel the inner workings of the syndicate by attempting to disband the KZN political killings task team, which was investigating the matter.

At the centre of Mkhwanazi’s allegations is an individual known as Brown Mogotsi, who claims to be a close associate of Mchunu.

Mkhwanazi said Mogotsi being privy to confidential police files is concerning.

“When I phoned the chief of staff to verify his identity, the chief of staff confirmed, ‘Yes, indeed, the guy is close to the minister but he’s not working for the minister.’ Maybe he’s a politician from the North West or elsewhere. But how will a person who is outside the department have in his possession information about the police? How does he get hold of it?”
