Two people have been arrested in Germiston following demonstrations by residents over evictions at a block of flats they have been occupying in the CBD.

Protesting residents set ablaze the Home Affairs building in the area, with some claiming they were taken by surprise when the Red Ants stormed into their homes to evict them.

The City of Ekurhuleni has been conducting evictions on four blocks of flats in Pharopark over unpaid rent.

The metro said it obtained an eviction order in June to remove the occupants for failure to pay their rent to the city, additionally claiming the tenants were sent notices on time to leave the premises.

Shoes, blankets, food, cutlery, and appliances litter the streets as the Red Ants forcefully remove people occupying a block of flats in Pharopark.

Some of the residents claimed they were not given an eviction notice, while others said their payments were up to date and they did not know why they were being evicted.

According to a court order, eviction notices were issued in June and the city said while there was no eviction date, residents were notified that it would be imminent.

Meanwhile, police have managed to disperse the protesters using teargas and rubber bullets and two people have been arrested.
